A quick recap from last lesson, we discussed what the Rapture of the Church was. Today, we discuss what the Second Coming of Christ is. Remember from last lesson, the Second Coming of Christ is a separate event from the Rapture. At the Rapture, the church (who are the born again believers in Christ) will meet the Lord in the air (1 Thess 4:17) Also, remember that the Rapture is an imminent event, it can happen at any moment and it’s a secret event, because it will come like a thief in the night. There are no signs to indicate when the rapture will be, but there are signs regarding the Second Coming of Christ.
Second Coming of Christ is?
The Second Coming is when Jesus Christ returns to the earth to defeat the Anti-Christ, to bring the Great Tribulation to an end, and establish his millennial kingdom. He will come back as the conquering King, with great power, thus fulfilling the scriptures.
John 14:3 – “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”
Acts 1:10-11 – “And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as he (Jesus) went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; which also said, ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.”
It reminds me of this song that I heard when I was little. It’s called He’s worthy by Sandra Crouch. This one little part in the song, in my opinion, pretty much tells how Jesus will return:
The king will come in the clouds
With great power and glory with Him
No man knows the day or the hour
But we await His soon return
The Second Coming of Christ is not going to be like his first coming. This time, he comes in ALL his splendor as God and the church will return with him. (Which is why there is no such thing as the post-tribulation rapture, because we the church, Christ’s bride, comes back with him after the Great Tribulation.) We will be at his side.
According to Gotquestions.org, the second coming is spoken in full detail in Revelation 19:11-16
11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.
12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.
13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.
14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.
15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, King Of Kings, And Lord Of Lords.
I remember singing the Hallelujah Chorus in High School, all four years. I was not saved then, but even I knew how powerful the message was in the Hallelujah Chorus. After I was saved, I learned that it was powerful, because it was scripture that will one day be seen by all.
“Hallelujah, For the Lord God, Omnipotent Reigneth.” Revelation 19:6
“The Kingdom of this world, is become; the Kingdom of the Lord and of his Christ; and he shall reign forever and ever.” Revelation 11:15
“King of Kings and Lord of Lords” Revelation 19:16
The word of God is the accurate, true version of the Second Coming of Christ and it is beautiful, because when he comes, every knee is going to bow and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
Don’t believe me, check this out:
Romans 14:11 – “For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.”
Philippians 2:9-11 – “For this reason also, God highly exalted him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
It don’t get no clearer that that.
So now that we have discussed what the second coming of Christ is, lets go deeper and see the signs that will indicate his return. This will be in the next post to come.
