Bible Study – Sinful Nature Series part 1

I’m learning slowly but surely how the Holy Spirit wants me to proceed when it comes to certain topics. Sometimes, I have no idea what to talk about, which is why sometimes there is a huge gap in the posts, along with not having the time. Then, maybe I’ll go on and lurk and a question would pop up and in reading the responses in the forum thread, I’m literally screaming in my head (I’m work when I’m mostly on there), because the ongoing bickering but mostly because of the incorrect answers. I mean people listen to what sounds great and what is suppose to make sense, but their logic is the opposite of what God says. This is why some preachers out there have a sugar-coating, make them feel good type of gospel and that’s good in theory to the human mind, but the soul will suffer because they weren’t taught what Christ told us in the bible.

So, if you can guess by the title, the sinful nature kept scream out at me to be talked about in this lesson. And let me tell you, it’s one of the most debated topics on Christian/bible forums today and that includes social media.

Why the sinful nature and its origins need to be understood? Well, it’s because it’s important to know why we needed a savior in the first place.

Romans 5:12 tells us this – “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.”

I guess in order to understand what that means; you have to start from the beginning. So, let’s begin!!!

The Original Sin

Everything got a beginning, including us as cutesy little babies. The reason as to why sin entered into the world is explained in the first 2 chapters of Genesis. In Genesis 2: 16-17 God is giving his instructions to Adam regarding what he can eat in the Garden of Eden. “The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely, but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”

So, that’s clear instructions from the parent to the child not to do something right? and it was plain as day as to what to eat and what not to eat. Remember in the Disney movie Aladdin, when Aladdin and Abu went to the cave of wonders for the lamp and the tiger or lion shaped head of the cave told them “Touch nothing but the lamp” Can you remember or guess what happened next? Aladdin gets the lamp but Abu got greedy and touched this huge ruby gem and although the expression on Abu’s face was funny, the tiger head did not think it was funny. He told them, after calling them Infidels and called them out on what they touched, “You will never again see the light of day” and then this huge explosion happened and the cave collapse.

So, I’m sure Adam was instructed to let Eve know the deal, unfortunately, Eve didn’t listen. The Serpent appealed to her and assured her “oh you want surely die” and I’m sure they all probably thought God meant physically. So, what happens, she eats the fruit (contrary to some popular belief, it has not been proven that the fruit was an apple.), then Adam eats of it and BAM!!!! They realize they were naked. Their disobedience took their innocence away. Some call it the end of the Dispensation of Innocence and the beginning of the Dispensation of Conscience. So, of course they got found out and they got in trouble. It’s funny how the pass the buck game started between Adam, Eve, and the Serpent.

Adam – Eve made me do it.

Eve – That serpent made me do it.

I’m sure at that time Mr. Serpent had an “oh snap” look on his face, especially since he was in the presence of the Almighty God.

Then they all got punished, including the serpent, who’s punishment was, I’ll give you a hint (it’s slithers on the ground and it makes ssssssssssss sound, and also has fangs that can kill you if they are venomous – they are also my greatest fear in this world)

Eve’s punishment was the pain of childbirth (Geez, thanks Eve. We women have to bleed at least 6 days out of the month, when our body doesn’t detect pregnancy, in addition to screaming our heads off in labor. Yeah, thanks!) and woman’s desire would be for her husband and he would rule over her (Gen 3:16) Adam gave Eve the name Eve after this went down, because she was now the mother of all living (Gen 3:20)

Adam’s punishment was because he listened to his wife and not God’s commandment, the ground was cursed and he had to work for his food. (Gen 3:17) The phrase that comes to mind is “Man don’t work, Man don’t eat”

The reason why the blame gets placed the most on Adam is because God gave him dominion over all living things. When he sinned, he basically gave that over to Satan to now have dominion over the earth, because the world was now infected with sin. This didn’t mean that Satan had the ultimate authority, but he rules over the unbelievers and because of Adam’s sin, all of mankind was born spiritually dead from God. The way he tricked Eve is the way he tricks the unbelievers into thinking that they don’t need God or they don’t need to be saved. So, when you here that it’s Adam’s fault that we are in the predicament that we are in today, it’s true. Adam’s disobedience caused the fall of man, which caused all of mankind to come to be guilty by association. (Ever head the phrase – Sins of the Father?) Adam and Eve were technically our first parents.

The great part regarding the original sin was the prophecy in Genesis 3:15 “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise they head, and though shalt bruise his heel.” This is the first promise of the coming Messiah, who is Jesus Christ as we know who willing took on human flesh and became sin for us who knew no sin. When he died on the cross, Genesis 3:15 was fulfilled. His payment in full for our ransom paved the way for mankind to be reconciled back to God the Father. So, there was definitely light at the end of the tunnel so to speak.

Homework: Read Genesis 2 and 3, from a godly standpoint and not a humanity standpoint. If you’re having difficulty understanding, don’t hesitate to ask the Holy Spirit for understanding.

So, stay tune to part 2 of the Sinful Nature.
